During the night of 15th-16th June, 1915, the 16th London battalion of 18 Brigade, 6th Division left their dug-outs in the east bank of the Yser canal at Ypres and moved up to the front line to protect the left flank of the 3rd Division when they attacked at Bellewaarde the next day, 16th June. 16th London took no active part in the attack but were subject to considerable heavy shelling during it as a result of which they sustained a number of casualties. Throughout that night and through into the next day, the battalion’s stretcher bearers and volunteers helped collect the many casualties of 3rd Division from the battlefield, despite the continuing shelling and other fire which added further to their own casualty list. Guy Burtenshaw died from wounds on 18th June. |
